Footprints Panel - data usage by SBB
The Footprints Panel is a mobility research panel operated by intervista AG. Participants have installed the Footprints Research app on their smartphones, which continuously records their mobility habits. In addition, online surveys are occasionally carried out with participants.
Footprints Panel participants may also be asked whether their personal mobility and survey data can also be used by SBB for research purposes. After consent has been provided, intervista shares personal mobility and survey data to SBB. SBB uses the data exclusively for research purposes.
Below you will find additional, specific information on how SBB uses your data and how it protects it.
Which data from the Footprints Panel are shared with SBB and for what purpose are data used by SBB?
intervista AG provides the following data to SBB:
- Location and movement data, i.e. time, route, purpose of journey and means of transport used for your journeys.
-
Survey data, i.e. the personal information that you have provided within the ambit of surveys
for the intervista Footprints Panel. These may include for example (non-exhaustive list):
- your age and gender
- means of transport to which you or your household have access, e.g. number of cars
- number of people in your household
- your Swiss Pass ID (or alternatively your name and date of birth) in order to supplement your mobility data with information concerning available travelcards, cf. next step.
Does SBB supplement this data with its own data?
Yes. SBB can also add data on your travelcards from the SBB databases to the above data:
- validity period of travelcards
- valid route / zones
- purchase price
What does SBB do with this data?
SBB can use these data to generate anonymised, aggregate assessments concerning general mobility habits in Switzerland.
SBB is interested in the following:
- Building basic knowledge on mobility behaviour
- Assessment of the impact of measures and projects
- Aligning new services and products with mobility needs
- Identifying opportunities and risks in the mobility market
- Collection of basic data for the purpose of improving and calibrating transport models
Here are a few examples:
Example 1: SBB analyses how the respective ratios among the various means of transport change over the course of the year.
Example 2: SBB analyses whether or not people who like to go on hiking excursions in the mountains often have a Half-Fare Travelcard.
Example 3: SBB analyses whether the travel distances predicted in transport models coincide with the actual distances travelled by the Swiss population.
Any analysis is under all circumstances carried out in anonymised, aggregate form. This means that it is not possible to make any inferences concerning specific individual people from the results of analyses.
